A 38-year-old man was arrested for attempting to rape a 14-year-old girl in Bekkersdal on Sunday, November 7.
According to Bekkersdal Police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the man who is known to the victim has since been charged with sexual assault after he allegedly forced himself on the victim by using a pillow to try to suffocate her.
“It has been alleged that the girl was sleeping at her home when the man came looking for his girlfriend. When the victim told him she had no idea where the girlfriend was, he left,” Sergeant Lefakane said.
Shortly after, the man returned to the victim’s house where he used a pillow to try to suffocate her while attempting to rape her. Fortunately, a neighbour arrived and pushed the suspect from the victim. The man fled.
“The victim and her neighbour called for help from the community, who called the police,” Sergeant Lefakane added.
