Westgold Primary school took the initiative to raise funds for children who are battling cancer.
School spokesperson Mariska du Plessis explained that their school was directly affected in August when one of their teachers’ children was diagnosed with cancer.
“It touched many hearts and caused much sorrow. If you ever see a child fight cancer it will change your life forever. One then realises again what you must be thankful for,” said Mariska.
Miranda Carlson, a teacher at the school started the initiative to hold a spirit week and raise money for children who are fighting cancer, and raising awareness of childhood cancer.
It was a fun way to involve the children in the good deed. All the learners and parents opened their hearts, and it was a big success,” stated Mariska.
She explained that childhood cancer awareness’ colour is yellow and it was very special when the Grade R learners of Westgold formed a yellow ribbon for the cause.
The rest of the learners at the school wore funky hair and funny socks of all sorts of colours to raise awareness on Thursday, October 28 and Friday, October 29.
“It was a bittersweet campaign and Westgold is proud to be a caring school and make a difference where we can,” said Mariska.
