Police honour cancer survivors and those who lost their lives

'Don't take your life for granted, support the fighters, admire the survivors, honour the taken and never give up hope' – police.

Management of the Randfontein Police held a Cancer and Mental Health Awareness campaign on Friday October 29 to promote better health and remind people that no one is alone in the fight against cancer.

Randfontein Police spokesperson Sergeant Carmen Hendricks said the campaign was also used to celebrate some of their members who are cancer survivors.

We had candles in different colours which represented the different cancers such as lung cancer (white); brain cancer (grey); breast cancer (pink); bone cancer (yellow) and liver cancer (emerald green) etc,” Sergeant Hendricks said.

She added that during the campaign, a cancer survivor told them about her journey.

Balloons were released into the air following the awareness campaign. Photo submitted.

“It wasn’t an easy journey for her as she was fortunate to have a good support system such as her friends, family and colleagues, and she managed to pull through. Our guest speaker advised people to always go for a check-up when they notice anything irregular in their bodies,” Sergeant Hendricks said.

At the end of the event, balloons were released into the air as a symbol of honouring cancer survivors and the memory of those who lost their lives to cancer.

Don’t take your life for granted, support the fighters, admire the survivors, honour the taken and never give up hope,” Sergeant Hendricks concluded.

Balloons were let go in the sky to honour survivors and the memory of those who lost their lives. Photo submitted.
