Police warn of new phone scam

Community warned of a new scam where fraudsters call unsuspecting people claiming that cases had been opened against them.

Management of the Randfontein Police warned the public of a new scam on the rise where fraudsters call unsuspecting people claiming that cases had been opened against them.

According to Randfontein Police spokesperson Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, scammers promise their victims that they would make the ‘case’ go away – at a price.

So far, five cases have been reported.

The scammers would say that they were calling you from Durban or any other place, and if you deposited money into their account they’ll help make the docket or case disappear,” Sergeant Hendricks explained.

She said fortunately, none of the potential victims in the five instances had fallen for the scam and did the right thing by contacting the police immediately.

Randfontein Police station commander Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela also urged the community not to deposit money when scammers ask them to do so, but to contact the police.

It is almost the festive season and these criminals will do anything to rob you of your hard-earned money,” Manamela added.

Randfontein Police can be contacted on 011 414 4992, or 071 675 7094; alternatively use the My SAPS app or call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 to report crime anonymously.
