Rand West City Walk For Purpose to support cancer survivors

'This was a campaign for a government oncology centre for the people in the West Rand' – organiser.

Hundreds of people came together bright and early at the Greenhills Stadium on Saturday, October 23 to show their support for cancer survivors and victims during the second annual Rand West City Walk For Purpose.

Dressed in pink, white and purple, the attendees took on the 5km and the 8km route around the streets of Greenhills.

After the walk there was a free aerobics class, vitals were checked, and cancer screening was available.

Meshack Mnyakeni from Zallas 4 Life, a cancer NGO in partnership with the Rand West City Local Municipality, Pillar of Strength, Arebueng Community Support group (GBV activists), Hilder Biyela from the Donjuliano Health Club, Polossus Athletics, the Randfontein Police’s Social Crime Unit and its the Youth Desk made the day possible.

Meshack, the head organiser said the purpose of the walk was to launch an annual awareness campaign against cancer with the vision to mobilise for a government oncology centre within the region, preferably in the Rand West City sub-region.

“This was a campaign for a government oncology centre for the people in the West Rand,” explained Meshack.

Some of the attendees decided to run the whole 5km and 8km to show their support for those who need it the most.
