Street fight tragedy: Pack of pit bulls released on man, dies of rabies two days later

The Erasmus family is mourning the death of a loved one who passed away from rabies days after being attacked by a pack of pit bulls during a street fight in Toekomsrus.

A man died from rabies just days after being attacked by a pack of pit bulls during a street fight in Toekomsrus.

According to family, Lester ‘Small’ Erasmus, 26, was attacked by the dogs just a few metres from his home on Friday October 8.

The sister of the deceased, Levan Erasmus, said the incident happened after Erasmus had a confrontation with the alleged owner of the dogs.

We regret not acting in time to save his life by taking him to hospital and get the necessary treatment, but unfortunately, when we found out the worse, it was too late for our brother.

“He didn’t want to go to the hospital. He said he would go on Monday October 11 because he thought he only sustained minor injuries. We also didn’t know that the dogs had infected him with rabies,” Levan said.

The family said they intend laying charges against the dog owners as soon as the post mortem results are released.

Erasmus was laid to rest at the Greenhills Cemetery on Saturday October 16.
