Lock doors, close windows when driving – woman who came close to being hijacked

Mom shares her experience of almost being hijacked in the Randfontein CBD recently.

A woman who came close to being hijacked while driving with her one-year-old son and young brother in the Randfontein CBD said it was only by God’s grace that they weren’t harmed.

The 25-year-old Shannon Flowers told the Herald about the incident that occurred on Thursday, September 23 while on her way to her home in Toekomsrus.

“I am happy to be alive and thank God for giving me another chance in life. Our lives could’ve changed drastically in a blink of an eye, had they decided to go through with their cruel actions,” she said.

Flowers explained that while waiting at a traffic light on Main Reef Road and Cecil Street from the direction of Village Square Mall, she noticed two unknown men trying to open doors on both sides of her car. Her son was in the passenger seat and luckily, the door was locked.

“I was in the middle lane and surrounded by other cars. Only my son’s passenger door was locked,” she said.

She added while waiting for the traffic light to change to green she noticed someone pulling on her son’s door and while another man was trying to open her door.

She believes the man who was pulling on her son’s passenger door was trying to distract her and after she screamed, one of them simply said ‘Sorry sister’ and both men ran away.

Flowers said although they’re all traumatised, she said she’s glad her faith in God saved her, and was grateful that no one was harmed.

However, she said what scared her even more about the experience was that a few days later she saw the same men in the same precinct, and also came across a post on Facebook by someone who had a similar experience.

“I saw the very same guys in the same spot and reported the matter to the police. They said they’d follow up. All I can say is motorists should lock their doors and close their windows because the people that are supposed to protect us aren’t doing so,” Flowers said.
