Weekend arrests in district total 145: Most for drunken driving, domestic violence

The West Rand Police patrolled and conducted crime operations over the weekend, and 145 people found themselves behind bars for various crimes.

West Rand — A total of 145 people found themselves behind bars for various crimes in the West Rand District (Mogale City, Rand West City and Merafong City) this past weekend.

Sergeant Elsie Tshonte of the West Rand District Police explained in a statement that the police in collaboration with other law-enforcement agencies committed themselves to creating a safe and secure environment for the communities in the District.

This was done through different mass operations from 06:00 on Friday, October 8 to 06:00 on Sunday, October 10.

The arrests included:
• Seven for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition
• Four for possession of a hijacked motor vehicle
• Three for possession of suspected drugs
• Two for possession of drugs
• One for possession of suspected stolen property
• One for possession of a dangerous weapon
• Two for possession of dagga
• One for possession of a copper cable
• Thirteen for assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm
• Two for armed robbery
• Two for common robbery
• Four for assault common
• Eleven for assault common under domestic violence
• Six for assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm under domestic violence
• Two for malicious damage to property
• Two for malicious damage to property and assault common
• One for malicious damage to property under domestic violence
• Five for theft
• One for theft of copper cables
• Eight for warrant of arrest
• One for contempt of court
• One for contravention of a protection order
• One for intimidation
• One for illegal mining
• One for fraud
• One for pointing a firearm
• One for house robbery
• Four for housebreaking and theft
• Three for contravening the Disaster Management Act regulations

The teams also focused on liquor-related crimes and 32 people were arrested for drunken driving, one for reckless or negligence driving, six liquor outlets were closed, and 13 illegal immigrants were also policed.

According to Tshonte the Acting District commissioner, Brigadier Theron welcomed these successes and thanked the members and community members who support the police.

“She further thanked members for treating people professionally and with dignity at all times,” Tshonte said.
