Suspects were arrested during the crime-prevention operation over the weekend.

Ninety people were arrested in numerous crime-prevention operations across the West Rand District from Friday, October 1 to Sunday October 3.

According to West Rand District Police spokesperson Sergeant Mulalo Ndou, those who faced the full might of the law were arrested in 13 police precincts in the region for the following offences: murder (two), domestic violence (seven), possession of copper cable (two), drunken driving (26), fraud (one), dealing and possession of drugs (14), possession of unlicensed firearm (one), contravention of mine safety (seven), and contravention of Disaster Management Act (one).

“Others were arrested for various crimes such as common assault and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, shoplifting, malicious damage to property, selling liquor without a licence, and undocumented persons,” Ndou said.

Motorists were warned that driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence, and is punishable by law.

“Drivers are urged not to drink alcohol and drive, as they can cause serious injuries to themselves and other road users,” Ndou reiterated.

All arrested suspects will appear in various magistrates’ courts in the District soon.

Acting West Rand District Police commissioner Brigadier Marinda Theron welcomed the arrests and thanked all members and other law-enforcement agencies for making sure that those who were in conflict with the law were brought to book.

She also condemned acts of gender-based violence and requested the community to report such offences and all other types of crimes to the police immediately on Crime Stop number 08600 10111; alternatively use the My SAPS app or SMS number 32211 and remain anonymous.
