Learners from all over the District compared their strength recently, but not physically. They compared their mental strength when they competed in the D2 district chess championships.
Jaco de Wet from Hoƫrskool Bastion, where the championships were hosted, explained that only the U/13s were allowed to proceed to nationals because of Covid-19.
Thirty boys and girls started their matches at 08:00 on Saturday, September 18, representing schools from across the District such as Pharong, Monument Primary, Curro, Laerskool Randfontein, Nooitgedacht Primary, Sedismosang Primary, Laerskool Muldersdrif and Laerskool Gerrit Maritz.

In the 2008 age group for boys Nicholas French from Monument Primary took first place, followed by Devahn Fourie from Curro, and Buthelezi Nkanyiso from Hlangabeza Primary in third.
Perry Fisher from Monument Primary took first place in the 2009 age group for boys followed by Christiaan Nolan from Laerskool Randfontein, Juan de Jager from Laerskool Gerrit Maritz Primary, and Junior Tshasheka from Hlangabeza Primary.

In the 2010 age group for boys Conrad Rankin from Laerskool Gerrit Maritz Primary took first place.
In first place for the girls 2008 age group was Clerisse van der Westhuizen from Laerskool Muldersdrif, followed by Molebogeng Mofokeng from Nooitgedacht Primary, and Lara Rankin from Laerskool Gerrit Maritz Primary.

For the girls 2009 age group Nosiphiwo Humane from Hlangabeza Primary finished in first place. In the girls 2010 age group Nooitgedacht Primary took the top three sports with Noeleen Ncube in first place, Hannah Tabe in second, and Tiara Chikambeka in third. Unathi Bassie from Hlangabeza Primary was fourth.

The U/13 learners who will be proceeding to the Gauteng championships are Perry Fisher, Nicholas French, Devahn Fourie, Junior Tshasheka, Noeleen Ncube, Nosipihwo Humane, Molebogeng Mofokeng and Unathi Bassie.
