New hope for small businesses in Westonaria thanks to mayor, Sibanye-Stillwater

Street vendors in the Westonaria CBD were given proper facilities to improve the local economy.

Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) Executive Mayor Brenda Mahuma, in partnership with Sibanye-Stillwater officially handed over 52 business stalls to vendors in the Westonaria CBD on Thursday 9 September.

In a media statement issued by the office of the mayor, Mahuma said the municipality provided the land while Sibanye-Stillwater built the stalls.

“This was a joint effort to boost the local economy. The stalls have basins, running water, electricity and plugs for preparing food on site,” Mahuma said, adding that the purpose was to help informal business owners who were selling food with facilities such as ablutions, braai, sitting and reception areas.

“The recipients of the stalls come from disadvantaged backgrounds and they depend mainly on the income of their businesses of selling food. This project was completed just in time before the rainy season,” Mahuma said.

We aim to better conditions for our small and local businesses, and would like to thank Sibanye-Stillwater for their commitment to the project.”
