Recyclers get massive boost

'The certificates were for recognising their hard work in bringing large quantities of material to the centre to be recycled and resold' – South African Waste Business Forum.

The South African Waste Business Forum (SAWBF) has officially formalised and handed over the long-awaited Mohlakeng Buypack Centre to the Mohlakeng Recycling entity on Wednesday September 8.

Spokesperson of SAWBF Teboho Motloung said the top 10 workers at the centre were also awarded with sales performance certificates, based on their performance between January and August.

“The certificates were for recognising their hard work in bringing large quantities of material to the centre to be recycled and resold,” Motloung said.

Explaining the history of the centre, Motloung said that in 2018, SAWBF embarked on a national roadshow in which they were supported by the Gauteng Department of Economic Development, (GDED) and they visited all the municipalities across Gauteng, which included the Rand West City Local Municipality.

Recycling centres across Gauteng were formalised so that employment opportunities were created for the locals.

“The Mohlakeng Buypack Centre had been abandoned for a long time; it was a white elephant due political interference and commonality issues.

“Our role was to select the right recyclers in the community and register an entity that will enable them to operate the centre. The entity was registered and is called Mohlakeng Recycling.”

They also helped to formally register the community to Mohlakeng Recycling that will operate the centre as the custodian.

“We are looking forward to rolling out similar projects in different municipalities in Gauteng in due course,” Motloung added.
