Municipality owes over R510 million to Eskom

The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) is one of the Gauteng municipalities heavily indebted to Eskom with more than R510 million owed to the power utility.

According to a media statement issued by Daphne Mokwena, the Senior Manager for Customer Services for Eskom in Gauteng, Emfuleni is the worst payer among all Gauteng municipalities.

Emfuleni ranks as the highest among Gauteng municipalities with poor payment levels and arrear debt greater than 30 days of more than R3 billion. The Emfuleni Municipality is followed by Merafong Local Municipality with over R570 million, RWCLM above R510 million, City of Tshwane above R200 million and City of Ekurhuleni above R8 million, respectively,” Mokwena said.

The City of Johannesburg, Midvaal Local Municipality and Lesedi Local Municipality have been praised for consistently honouring their payment to Eskom.

In the media statement, Mokwena said Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) has signed a payment agreement with Eskom for its outstanding total debt of more than R361 million, and has been honouring its payments.
