Housebreaking and theft dominate list of crimes this past week

Mapogo released its latest crime report for the period from 9 to 15 August – all of which were housebreaking and theft.

It was a relatively quiet week for Mapogo A Mathamaga Security with just a few incidents being reported in Randfontein.

Operations manager at Mapogo, Ben Willemse said three serious incidents were reported for their client base for the period Monday, August 9 to Sunday, August 15.

A breakdown of the crime incidents:

• Tuesday, August 10 at 06:04 – Housebreaking and theft on Road 5, Bootha Plots: Intruders gained entry onto the property by climbing over the perimeter wall. They subsequently stole a firearm, laptops and cash from the house whilst the owner was asleep inside the house.

• Wednesday, August 11 at 11:55 – Housebreaking and theft on North Way Road, Greenhills: Thugs lifted the gate from the rails, broke a large window, stole a TV and fled the scene.

• Friday, August 13 at 23:43 – Housebreaking and theft on Ventersdorp Road, Vogelstruisfontein Plots: Thieves forced open the premises, stole an unknown amount of alcohol, and fled the scene.

Willemse gave the following crime-prevention tips:

• Trim trees and bushes around your home to reduce cover for burglars.
• Be a good neighbour – if you notice anything suspicious in your neighbourhood, call Mapogo or the police immediately.
• Always ensure that your alarm is in a working condition as you never know when you will really need it.
• Avoid false or unnecessary alarm activations – these cause a strain on resources and might be the result that your security company cannot get to a real emergency quicker as they had to attend to a false alarm prior to this emergency.
• Ensure that users are familiar with the operation of the alarm system as this can assist with reducing false alarm activations. Contact the Mapogo control room on 010 492 4321 to cancel any false alarm activations.
