From disabled to able thanks to wheelchair donation

An electric wheelchair was donated to a learner at Itumeleng LSEN school thanks to the Wellness4U Foundation and a generous sponsor.

The Wellness4U Foundation handed over an electric wheelchair to a learner at Itumeleng LSEN school in Westonaria on Wednesday, August 11.

Spokesperson for the foundation, Kgomotso Mogapi said the school made a plea for the 15-year-old Hlumelo Xundu, who had been struggling with mobility due to cerebral palsy, and had been staying at home for more than a year.

His obesity contributes to his inability to carry his weight, and because he has limited use of his hands his wheelchair dexterity and functional mobility are impaired,” Mogapi said.

Life is difficult for Xundu, as he relies on others to get around.

Mogapi said the motorised wheelchair will help to ease the burden on the family as Xundu will now be able to move around independently both at school and home.

His quality of life will be improved and his dignity retained. Fortunately, Faizel Patel of Refrimate South Africa made a generous contribution by buying the electric wheelchair as per Wellness4U Foundation’s request. On behalf of Itumeleng Special School and the Xundu family we sincerely thank Faizel for his generous contribution,” Mogapi added.

A grateful Rebecca Monnakgotla, principal of the school, said the wheelchair will help Xundu immensely.

“We are truly grateful for the donation because improving the life of someone with a disability is a wonderful gesture. The learner will now have it much easier at school after missing classes for such a long time,” Monnakgotla said.
