Suicide, fire at business among six incidents this week – Mapogo

Mapogo released its latest crime report for the period from August 2 to 8 – from a suicide in Vleikop to a serious fire in the CBD.

Mapogo A Mathamaga Security in Randfontein released its latest crime report for the period from Monday, August 2 to Sunday, August 8.

According to the Mapogo operations manager, Ben Willemse, six serious incidents were reported for their client base during this period.

A breakdown of the crime incidents:

• Monday, August 2 at 13:26 – Suicide on a plot in Vleikop

Mapogo was requested to assist as a person committed suicide on the premises. The medical services and police were contacted and the scene was handed over to them for further investigation.

• Monday, August 2 at 05:19 – Housebreaking and theft on Davies Street, Homelake

Thief used a ladder to gain entry into the client’s garage and stole an unknown number of items.

• Tuesday, August 3 at 05:19 – Housebreaking and theft on Main Reef Road, Randfontein CBD

Thieves gained entry by climbing over the palisade fence at the rear of the premises. The security guard was overpowered and tied up whilst they stole a large number of gas containers. On searching the area Mapogo officers and the police retrieved 32 gas bottles and handed them back to the owner.

• Wednesday, August 4 at 00:12 – Fire on Sutherland Street, Randfontein CBD

Mapogo officers were informed that a business was on fire, and on arrival several shops were found burning. The fire brigade attended but unfortunately the shops completely burned down.

• Friday, August 5 at 14:08 – Housebreaking and theft on Myburgh Street, Randpoort

Thieves lifted the gate from its rail and gained entry to the house through the back door. They stole electrical appliances and fled the scene with them.

• Sunday, August 8 at 05:58 – Attempted break-in on Village Street, Randfontein CBD

Would-be thieves attempted to force open the roller shutter door of the business, but were unable to gain entry and fled the scene.

Willemse also wished to make the public aware of the following crime-prevention tips:

• Be aware of suspicious-looking people or vehicles. Should you feel unsafe rather drive past and report this immediately.
• Be sure that you know all the emergency numbers or have them displayed in an accessible area.
• Avoid displaying valuables where criminals can see them.
• Be vigilant at all times.

“Be aware, stay alert and remain safe,” concluded Willemse.
