A woman was arrested after being found with an unlicensed firearm and live rounds of ammunition in her possession.

Randfontein Police spokesperson, Sergeant Carmen Hendricks said an on-duty police officer received information about a woman with a firearm sitting in a white Nissan Navara in Park Street at about 03:00 on Wednesday, August 4.

The unknown woman inside the vehicle informed the police that it was her late father’s firearm.

She was arrested and a case of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm was opened against her, and she was detained at Randfontein police station.

Sergeant Hendricks explained that in terms of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000 members of the public who were left with firearms which belonged to their next of kin who had passed on can use the firearm amnesty to surrender unwanted and unlicensed firearms and ammunition at their police station.

“The police wish to issue a stern warning to the public that we condemn any form of criminal behaviour, and that we will make sure that perpetrators are brought to book,” warned Sergeant Hendricks.
