• Spot the termite mounds
If you visit Melville Koppies Central (Nature Reserve and Heritage Site) now, you’ll find certain areas that are black from burning. This was a planned burn to keep the Koppies as grassland. Grasslands have been around for millions of years. Fire is a necessity for grasslands as they burn the dead material, creating ash which sends nutrients to the soil so that plants can regrow and seeds can find a space to lodge themselves, germinate and sprout. Burning stops trees from taking over from the grassland. The recent burn has exposed round mounds of compacted soil. These are the mounds of the snouted termite – the biggest guzzlers of the grass on the Koppies. The mounds march along adjacent to the path and up the hillside. See how many you can spot across the burnt hillside. Come back again in a few months, walk the same route and see how everything has grown back, greener and stronger. Melville Koppies Central is open every Sunday in 2021 from 08:00 to 11:30. No need to pre-book. Adults R80 and children R40; season ticket for a year per adult – R500 (not transferable). All income used for maintenance and security of the Koppies – R22 000 per month needed. Security on the Koppies is provided; park in secure parking opposite the entrance at Marks Park on Judith Road, Emmarentia. Contact wendavid@mweb.co.za. Check out www.mk.org.za for more detailed information about the history and what you can see.

• Online art auction in support of House of Restoration
The Cradle of Hope commemorates Women’s Month by honouring all women who played a part in laying the foundation for women to have a voice. To each and every woman surviving hardship, abuse, patriarchy, or inequality in some form, we salute you! Their House of Restoration (Est 2010) in West Krugersdorp is a safe haven and a place of empowerment for destitute, vulnerable and abused women and their children. They have come to them from all over the country and have often been the victims of domestic violence, abuse, sexual trauma, and human trafficking; many turned to addiction and prostitution. They all have one desire in common: To let go of their past and build a better future – for themselves, and for their children. The Cradle of Hope believes that a mother’s own well-being and stability play a crucial role in the well-being of her children, family, and community. On Monday, August 9 (Women’s Day), they will be hosting an online art auction between 08:00 and 20:00 on their Facebook page in support of our House of Restoration. You can follow this link: The Cradle of Hope NPC South Africa | Facebook

• Take a breather
With restrictions still firmly in place to keep the Delta variant at bay, there are still things you can do and places you can explore. Take your kids to Melville Koppies Nature Reserve and Heritage Site. See if you can find the site where hunter gatherers camped thousands of years ago. Situated on a north-facing slope and nestled against a ridge, it was perfectly sheltered when that cool breeze brought the freezing air from the south in winter. See the only restored iron-making furnace in Joburg that was used by the first farmers in the area until the early 1800s. Marvel at their iron-making skills. They knew the rocks that were iron-bearing, built clay furnaces to melt them down, and used their knowledge of the relationship between heat and oxygen levels to smelt iron over a lengthy 18 hours. Melville Koppies Central (Nature Reserve and Heritage Site) is open every Sunday in 2021 from 8am to 11.30am. No need to pre-book. Adults R80 and children R40; season ticket for a year per adult – R500 (not transferable). All income used for maintenance and security of the Koppies – R22 000 per month needed.
