Mass weekend police operations in West Rand District yield 263 arrests

Murder, armed robbery and sexual assault were among the crimes that the 263 suspects were arrested for this past weekend in the West Rand District.

A total of 263 arrests were made during another weekend operation throughout the West Rand District. The operation was held from Friday, July 16 to Sunday, July 18.

Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, spokesperson for the West Rand District Police and the Randfontein Police said their members with other law-enforcement agencies continued with crime intelligence operations in the West Rand District Policing Precinct and focused on crime prevention, stops-and-searches, and compliance with Disaster Management Act Regulations.

The operations included the detectives tracing wanted suspects, which saw 263 arrests.

Suspects were arrested for the following:

One for murder; two for attempted murder; one for armed robbery; one for pointing a firearm; two for robbery; two for incitement to commit public violence; two for possession of stolen property; two for possession of gold-bearing material; three for possession of suspected stolen property; one for sexual assault; one for housebreaking and theft; one for possession of housebreaking implements; five for malicious damage to property; one for malicious damage to property and intimidation; two for dealing in liquor without a licence and for contravention of the Disaster Management Act Regulations; one for dealing in drugs; one for dealing in drugs and bribery; one for contravention of the Pharmacy Act; 13 for possession of drugs; nine for possession of dagga; one for possession of drugs and failure to confine oneself; one for fraud; 10 for theft; six for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm; one for contravention of protection order; 12 for drunk driving; one for drunk driving and failure to confine oneself; 71 for contravention of Disaster Management Act Regulations and failing to confine oneself; one for contravention of Disaster Management Act Regulations by transporting of liquor; five for contravention of Disaster Management Act Regulations by failing to wear a mask; and other crimes ranging from domestic violence-related cases to illegal immigrants.

We want to bring to the attention of the community that Covid-19 is real and that we have noticed not all are adhering to the Disaster Management Act Regulations. You will be arrested if we find you on the road without complying with the act. It is in the best interest of everyone to adhere to the protocols,” stated Hendricks.

All arrested suspects will appear in different magistrates’ courts in the District.

She said the District Police Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana thanked the South African Police members and other law-enforcement agencies together with the community for their assistance to make sure that all perpetrators were brought to book.
