Another successful Okae Molao Operation sees 114 arrests

Arrests were made from murder, rape, common assault and intimidation, among other.

The West Rand District Police had another successful Okae Molao Operation on Thursday, July 1. The operation that was conducted in the Randfontein Policing Precinct included South African Police Service, Gauteng Traffic Police, Rand West Traffic Police, Correctional Services and Community Safety members, as well as community patrollers.

Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere, spokesperson for the West Rand District Police said the aim was to restrict criminal movement, trace stolen and unlicensed vehicles, search of unlicensed firearms, intercept transportation of stolen property or prohibited goods, and enforce the Disaster Management Act regulations.

“The operation consisted of two static roadblocks on the R28 and the R559, and on Kenneth Road and Homestead Avenue; one crime-prevention group; and one rural safety group,” explained Mogwere.

During the operation, 114 arrests were secured for the following crimes:

• One for murder
• One for rape
• One for possession of firearm
• One for possession of ammunition
• One for pointing a firearm
• Four for common robbery
• Three for attempted motor vehicle theft
• Two for business burglary
• One for housebreaking and theft
• Five for theft
• 22 for assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm
• 10 for common assault
• Four for common assault under domestic violence
• One for contempt of court
• Two for contravention of protection order
• One for intimidation
• Six for malicious damage to property
• Six for reckless and/ or negligent driving
• One for possession of stolen property
• 12 for operating gambling premises illegally in terms of the Disaster Management Act regulations
• 27 illegal immigrants

Mogwere added that 14 fines to the value of R20 000 were issued to those gambling illegally, and using a communication device while driving a motor vehicle.

All arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court.

Mogwere said the District Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana was grateful towards his members and other law-enforcement agencies for their hard work and commitment to continue serving the community, even in the uncomfortable time where Covid-19 infections are rife in our lives.

“To safeguard yourself, your family and colleagues, stay home when you are off duty, avoid going to crowded places unnecessarily, wear your mask, and sanitize or wash your hands frequently,” said Kekana.
