Matriculant stands up for the needy

Selfless Onthatile Mashaba does more than your average Grade 12 learner and has started an NPO to assist the needy, abused and those who are discriminated against.

While his main focus is on completing matric this year, a Grade 12 learner from AB Phokompe Secondary School remains dedicated to helping the needy and making a difference in society.

Meet 17-year-old Onthatile Mashaba who strives to better the lives of the destitute across Rand West City.

Onthatile aims to empower people through his NPO called Tsosanang, and make them realise their potential, stand up and ‘do it themselves’.

He said after seeing many lives falling apart, particularly due to Covid-19, he knew it was time to debunk the belief that government will always be there to extend a helping hand. Instead, Thabang said the responsibility falls on each person’s own shoulders.

“We gather contributions and donations for the poorest of the poor because our vision is to see each and every person in a better position, living a better life,” Thabang said.

Although government is trying its best, there are still many who aren’t reached, he said.

“I thought as young as I am, how about standing up for everyone and not blaming the government for some of its shortcomings, but doing something constructive like bridging the gap,” he explained.

He said his programmes are not only focused on helping and giving handouts, but changing mindsets, especially towards education and helping those with potential to unlock their raw talents.

“The government can only do so much; the rest depends on us to repair the state of the ailing socioeconomic climate.”

He said his organisation also takes a stand in the community against abuse and discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) community.

Thus far, his NPO has volunteered at old age homes and orphanages, helped soup kitchens in the area, and conducted extra classes for Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners.

“We are only a year old but we believe there’s so much we are destined for and so much we can do to empower many,” Thabang added.
