Police out and about creating awareness in Westonaria

Police in the West Rand District visited Westonaria to create awareness about crime in the area and its surrounds, as well as improve relations between the police and the public.

Members of the West Rand District Police visited Westonaria to create awareness and warn people about common crimes in town and surrounding areas.

The campaign was held in the Westonaria CBD on Friday, 21 May.

Pamphlets were also handed out to create awareness about crime. Photo submitted.

Sergeant Audrey Sefara, the Westonaria Police spokesperson said the campaign sought to improve relations between the police and the public so that no crime goes unreported.

“A loudhailer was used to sensitise the community to crimes such as attempted murder, assault, gender-based violence, house and street robberies, and drug abuse, which are very prevalent in this area,” Sefara said.

Businesses were visited and warned about robberies and truck hijackings as they are most often targeted.

“A 30-year-old woman suspect was also arrested for possession of drugs,” Sefara said.

“We’ve had an engagement with the locals who raised their concerns about crime in their neighbourhoods. Concerns about incidents near Libanon were also raised.”

Constable Portia Mabala and Sergeant Audrey Sefara interacted with local businesses during the campaign. Photo submitted.

Sefara said people were encouraged to report any criminal activities or when they see anything suspicious.

“Pamphlets we gave out contain safety tips, and contact details of the police, their sectors and emergency services,” Sefara added.
