Life Robinson takes their knowledge to Tulbach House

Bruce Barker and Jacques de Lange, physiotherapists at Life Robinson Private Hospital went to share their knowledge with the Tulbach House care workers.

The Tulbach House care workers received a life-changing visit from Life Robinson Private Hospital physiotherapists on Thursday, 6 May.

Bruce Barker, director of Luke & Barker Physiotherapy at Life Robinson Private Hospital and his colleague Jacques de Lange held an outreach at Tulbach House to share some of their knowledge with the care workers. He explained that the outreach in collaboration with the staff at the house was arranged as part of their ongoing relationship with the house and their clients.

“We understand that our therapists can see clients at Tulbach House only perhaps once or twice a week, but they need to have their mobility addressed daily,” said Bruce.

He added that they regarded the care workers at Tulbach as an essential part of the process, and that is why they decided to share mobility skills that the care workers would find useful.

Some of the skills that the care workers were taught included how to assist clients who are mobility-challenged to walk safely, as well as how to be more independent in general mobility.

“We also did problem-solving with the care workers, such as how to help clients when they fall as well as how to move bed-bound patients safely and effectively,” explained Bruce.

Bruce added that the seven care workers engaged in the practical sessions enthusiastically.

He said they assist with similar training for the nursing staff at Robinson on an ongoing basis, and have run similar training sessions for other old age homes.

“The field of ‘manual handling’ extends far beyond just helping patients and medical workers move in safer ways, so there is a lot more material that we can still teach the workers,” said Bruce.
