RWCLM scandal: Municipal manager given until 17 May to explain himself

The municipal manager has until 17 May to explain to the executive mayor why he should not be suspended after findings of fraud, corruption and maladministration against him.

The municipal manager of the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) has been given until Monday, 17 May to explain why he should not be suspended.

The municipal manager is among those under fire after findings of fraud, corruption and maladministration were recently revealed by Lebogang Maile, Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Urban Planning and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA).

According to Tshidiso Tlharipe, spokesperson of the executive mayor, the municipality held a special council meeting last Thursday, 6 May.

“The meeting considered the report by Advocate Mokhare SC and adopted it. The council has asked the executive mayor to write to the municipal manager and present all the allegations as contained in the report,” Tlharipe said.

The letter stated that the municipality wished to establish why it should not put the municipal manager on precautionary suspension, and they expect of the municipal manager to give such reasons on or before Monday, 17 May.

“The municipality will have a scheduled special council meeting on 26 May 2021 where councillors will take a decision based on the response of the municipal manager whether to suspend him or not. As things are, the municipal manager is not suspended,” Tlharipe said.
