Police play ‘teachers’ to get through to youngsters

Learners from around the West Rand recently joined the police for a weekend long study camp where they also discussed some serious issues.

“We shape the tool that in turn will shape us.” Sergeant Kgomotso Comfort Mogwere, the Magaliesburg Police spokesperson reiterated this well-known quote.

He explained that at 9am on Saturday, 24 April, the Magaliesburg Police and the Department of Education welcomed learners from 12 West Rand District schools to enjoy a study camp at the Magalies River Lodge.

Members of the Crime Prevention and Visible Policing Units, assisted by community patrollers, helped to ensure the learners’ safety by searching the learners entering the camp to make sure no drugs or weapons were taken into the camp; and ensuring everyone adhered to Covid-19 regulations by maintaining social distance, wearing their masks and sanitizing.

The team addressed issues such as bullying, gangsterism, peer pressure, vandalism and drugs. According to Mogwere the educators and learners said they were happy and felt safe.

The last day of the camp was Tuesday, 27 April and learners were also given extra classes while police constantly patrolled the camp grounds.
