Two imprisoned for violating protection order – one is from Randfontein

Two men were handed down prison sentences recently after they had violated the protection orders against them.

Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere, spokesperson for the West Rand District Police said domestic violence and gender-based violence are still a concern in our communities, but it seemed the repercussions are sometimes overlooked.

The statement followed after a 26-year-old man was handed a three-year prison sentence of which half has been suspended for five years after he violated a protection order. The Kagiso man has also been declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The victim alleged that she had been abused by her ex-boyfriend several times until she obtained the protection order against him.

“On Sunday, 28 February, the respondent violated the order and consequently found himself behind bars,” said Mogwere.

He added that in an unrelated incident a 29-year-old Bekkersdal man received a two-year prison sentence for also contravening a protection order.

“The respondent repeatedly abused his mother by chasing her out of her house and threatened to kill her if she refused to leave the house.”

A protection order was obtained against the man and when he violated it he was arrested.

Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police commissioner was delighted with the outcome.

“Law and order must be maintained, and those who find themselves on the wrong side of the law will be dealt with accordingly,” he warned.

Mogwere requested the public to break the silence and report people who break the law to their nearest police station or call the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111, communicate via the My SAPS app or send an SMS to 32211 and remain anonymous.
