Randfontein Police warn of online vehicle transaction scam

Randfontein Police warn that scamsters use the internet and social media to lure and scam victims who want to buy vehicles.

Randfontein Police expressed great concern about numerous fraud cases that victims have opened at the station following transactions to buy vehicles online.

“We want to alert the community to be vigilant and careful of people looking to defraud you on the internet and Facebook,” said Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

She said those shopping for vehicles need to be extra cautious of fraudsters exploiting their financial and emotional vulnerability in these times.

“The internet has become an important tool in the hands of those scamsters. It is of the utmost importance that buyers and sellers pay close attention to these processes to avoid getting scammed.

“We recently had cases of victims who were defrauded of their money when they believed they were buying vehicles on the internet and/ or Facebook. After depositing their money the scamsters are nowhere to be found and cellphones are off. We urge members of the public to please do proper research before depositing money into anyone’s account.”

Randfontein Detectives are requesting the community to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrests of these perpetrators.
