National organisation cleans parts of Randfontein

Members of Move One Million and volunteers embarked on a mass cleaning-up project in Aureus

Members of Move One Million and volunteers embarked on a mass cleaning-up project on Stubbs and First Street in Aureus on Saturday, 10 April.

Lizl Pistorius, MOM Field Representative said part of their national crusade is to challenge local municipalities to improve conditions for their communities.

“We are not a political party, but we are an organisation that’s against corruption, so we are taking on all the municipalities to make sure people live under better conditions,” Pistorius said.

Sherifa Chirwa and Charl Bredeman were also part of the clean-up.

She added that as a result of the lack of basic amenities such as dustbins or waste removal, waste ends up being dumped everywhere, which ultimately creates a very unhealthy environment for the locals.

“So we have tasked ourselves with going from place to place every Saturday to do mass clean-ups. We are running a #1milliontrashbags campaign for the next two months, and so far we have 600 000 garbage bags that are being collected in the whole country.”

Lizl said their organisation heard of Randfontein residents’ cries about the condition of their town on social media – how things such as roads were riddled with endless potholes, about how yards are flooded with sewage non stop.

“We want to help fix the potholes, and cut some of the bushes because it exposes innocent people to various crimes, but we need the community to be on our side. We would love for people to put some pressure on their municipality; making sure that there are dustbins and that potholes are fixed,” Lizl said.

Lizl reminded residents that it doesn’t help to keep complaining as she believes by joining hands great change is possible.
