Young man found with illegal firearm, ammo during operation

'Crime increases in illegal mining hotspots where rival illegal mining gangs kill each other over mining territories' – spokesperson for the West Rand District Police.

A 20-year-old man was arrested in Mohlakeng for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition during a joint operation held by police and community patrollers in the West Rand District on Wednesday, 7 April.

Police found the 9mm Norinco pistol, seven rounds of ammunition and one magazine in the youngster’s possession.

He is expected to appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court soon.

Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere, the West Rand District Police spokesperson said the operation was aimed at tracing unlicensed firearms and gold-bearing materials, as well as preventing crime and intensifying police visibility.

While addressing the morning parade, Colonel Zwane sensitised members about their safety and emphasised that crime was increasing in illegal mining hotspots where rival illegal mining gangs kill each other over mining territories,” said Mogwere.

Other minor offences that were policed were four undocumented persons.

On behalf of the District Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana, the operational commander, Lieutenant Colonel Zwane thanked all the role players for their commitment and urged the community to be the eyes of the police at all times.

Community members are encouraged to comply with the National Disaster Management Act regulations and work with the police in the fight against crime by reporting those who break the law to the nearest police station, or by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or by communicating via the My SAPS app or SMS number 32211 to remain anonymous.
