Grannies knit for West Gold Primary

The elderly residents of Friendship Haven knitted 22 jerseys for learners of West Gold Primary ahead of winter.

Twenty-two hand-knitted jerseys were donated to learners of West Gold Primary School last Friday, 26 March.

This after six elderly residents of Friendship Haven took it upon themselves to help families hit hard by Covid-19.

Jenny Mpete, spokesperson and social worker at the centre said the initiative was simply an act of goodwill.

They thought about how tough it must be for many, especially parents, whose children recently started school. The idea is to donate as many as we can to local schools.”

Jenny went on to say that the elderly are very fond of children. Many have grandchildren of their own and they miss them. They wanted to reach out and show they can still make a difference, even though they are restricted due to Covid-19.

Itumeleng Mokone, spokesperson of the school appreciated the kind gesture from the elderly and praised the initiative, saying the jerseys will go a long way to make learners feel warm this winter.

We would like to thank the elderly women who have spent their time on us. We have learners who are disadvantaged; some do not even have food, and they cannot afford school fees. Initiatives such as these really mean a lot,” Itumeleng concluded.
