Young mom jailed over infant’s drowning

Bekkersdal Police station commander praises cops, describes crime of young mother who drowned child 'despicable'.

A 24-year-old woman of Mohlakeng has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after drowning her one-year-old daughter in the Donaldson Dam in December 2019.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, Nonhlanhla Ubesi was found guilty in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 24 March.

The sentence came after the accused had drowned her baby girl at 3.30pm on 13 December 2019,” Lefakane said.

She added that the body of the infant was found floating in the dam, and on 23 December 2020, the mother was arrested after sufficient evidence was produced against her.

Colonel Phumelele Matamela, the Bekkersdal Police station commander commended all those who ensured that justice was served as it would deter young mothers from committing such despicable crimes.
