Fixing the town, one pothole at a time

'The ratepayers are getting sick and tired of paying rates and taxes and getting no service delivery for it' – councillor.

The community might have heard some noise in Culemborg Park on Saturday morning, 20 March, but don’t worry, it was just community members coming to the rescue to fix the unbearable potholes in the area.

Ward 7 DA councillor Craig Harrison and his team for the day used five tons of tar just to try and make the pothole-riddled streets drivable again.

According to Craig, he has been asking the municipality to fix the potholes in his ward to no avail, so he decided to help speed things up a bit.

“The ratepayers are getting sick and tired of paying rates and taxes without getting any services for it,” said Craig.

He explained that he went to speak to people in his ward and Willie Thiart, a business owner and resident of Ward 7 donated all the tar, and provided a truck and the driver for the day. Polomino Gas and Electrical in Homestead Avenue sponsored the equipment to compact the tar.

Craig’s ward committee as well as family and friends jumped at the opportunity to help him get the roads back into a usable condition.

The team filled approximately 150 potholes in Haarlem, Van Der Stel, Jan Fiskaal and Patrys Streets, but they still haven’t finished.

He said they were focusing on Ward 7 first, because of the donations received from the ward.
