The West Rand District Police embarked on an educational campaign for tuck-shop owners in Bekkersdal and Simunye last week.
Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said in their partnership with health inspectors, tuck-shop owners were told to avoid selling expired goods to the public and always ensure that they adhere to environmental regulations.
Lefakane said expired and counterfeit products were seized during the operation and owners were fined; some even were given stern warnings.
Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police Commissioner, applauded the operation and said it made sure that the health of consumers is protected.
