The SPCA’s challenge to schools

The RandWest SPCA challenges local high schools to a competition aiming to raise funds.

The new committee of the RandWest SPCA is challenging local high schools to a competition aimed at raising funds for the cash-strapped NPO.

Candice Cloete, a new member of the committee, whose brainchild the competition was, said they have three schools on board with whom they’re currently in talks.

“We want the schools to donate R5 coins in a box for two weeks. The boxes will then be weighed and whoever’s box weighs the most will win,” Candice explained.

She added that the winners will be announced publicly and will also get an opportunity to have a fun fact or a historical piece mentioned about them. The coins from all the schools will be counted and donated to the SPCA.

Maggie Mudd, liaison officer of the National Council of the SPCAs (NSPCA) said the funds raised will help the SPCA with expenses such as the bills they need to pay and the workers’ salaries – saving the organisation from its dire financial distress.

Maggie said there are six vacancies on the committee and people are welcome to send their CVs.

However, she warned that the committee is not the tea party some perceive it to be, but it consists of people committed to raising funds and who care dearly about animal welfare.

“We’re coming up with brand-new ideas and we want to see how it goes,” she said.

Maggie has also appealed to the community to donate money or items that will be of use to the organisation, and always to have their pets sterilised.

“We don’t want to come to a point where we have to close down, because people will lose jobs; also if we close, that will mean that the other surrounding SPCAs will be under even more pressure,” Maggie said.

She said the effects of Covid-19 have also had an impact on them, as those who no longer can afford to keep their animals approach the SPCA, adding to their financial woes.

“We are seeing an influx of animals, but we don’t have any extra money. We can only operate as well as the funds we have allow us,” Maggie said.

Those who wish to join the SPCA committee can send their CVs to liasion3@nspca.co.za.
