Brave victim, 15, fights back, kills rapist

'While the suspect was raping her she fought back and managed to get hold of the firearm. She shot the rapist in the upper body' – Police.

A minor shot and killed the man who had raped her in Wedela on the far West Rand over the weekend.

According to Captain Eddie Boboko, the West Rand District Police spokesperson, the incident occurred late on Saturday night, 6 March in an open veld in Wedela, which is part of the Merafong City Local Municipality in the West Rand District.

He said the suspect (deceased) aged between 25 and 30, threatened the girl, aged 15, with a firearm. He dragged her into an open veld where he instructed her to undress herself. He also undressed himself and raped her.

While the suspect was raping her she fought back and managed to get hold of the firearm. She shot the rapist in the upper body, dropped the firearm and ran back home where she reported the incident to her mother who instructed her to go to bed.

“The police were summoned to the scene the following day, Sunday, 7 March where the victim pointed out the crime scene to the police. The deceased suspect was found at the scene and his firearm was missing. Police’s K9 members launched a search for the firearm but could not find it. A case of rape has been opened and is being investigated. The victim will be undergoing counselling.”

Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police Commissioner called on all men to take responsibility in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV).

GBV is one of the main focuses of the police’s national strategies to decrease crime against women and children. We are saying to young women to always be vigilant while at home or walking alone in open spaces with long grass. Always be aware of your surroundings.”

He also urged the community to give information on the firearm that had gone missing at the crime scene. Anyone with information can provide it anonymously to the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111 or the Wedela Police on 071 675 7180
