Police create awareness among learners

A variety of issues affecting the safety of learners were addressed during the police's visit to Izanokanyo Primary School in Simunye.

Bekkersdal Police embarked on an awareness campaign at Izanokanyo Primary School in Simunye.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, a variety of issues affecting the safety of learners were addressed during the visit on Monday, 8 March.

Lefakane, who was also the coordinator of the campaign, said learners were told that police are to be trusted at all times as they’re the ones dedicated and obliged to protect and serve those who are vulnerable, such as children.

Lefakane said learners were told that if they felt a crime was being committed or someone was breaking the law, they should not hesitate to report it to their seniors, so that it could be reported to the police.

Among the lessons we’ve given them were how to recognise signs of bullying, sexual assault and even rape. We’ve delved deeper into the subject of bullying by talking about the various forms it may take, for example it may occur when learners call each other names, or simply take others’ lunch boxes,” Lefakane said.

Learners were also told to avoid fighting and provoking each other as it may lead to those feeling vulnerable seeking protection from gangs.

“We’ve told them they were wonderful gifts to their parents from God and deserved to be loved, cared for and nurtured. We’ve told them to love and appreciate their school and the work that their teachers do,” Lefakane added.
