Failed Matric, what now?

While there was a lot to celebrate, a number of Grade 12s did not pass, or failed to achieve their desired results. There are however, a number of options for them.

Over the last few days the Class of 2020 received their final results.

The Independent Examination Board (IEB) matric class of 2020 achieved a 98,07 percent pass rate while the Department of Basic Education matric class of 2020 achieved a pass rate of 76,2 percent, a drop of 5,1 percent compared to 2019. While the majority can heave a sigh of relief, others had to confront the fact that they failed their final year.

Coleen Cronje, Chief Executive Officer of Online School, Brainline, said this is not the end of the line.

“Failing your matric can be quite a shock to the system; however, now is not the time to be despondent as there are numerous options to consider, the first of which is to apply for a remark. If you suspect there was a mistake, you can contact your school and ask for the relevant forms to apply for a re-mark of your papers. There is a cost involved in re-marking a paper, so make sure that you want to do it. You can apply for a remark either at your school or District Education office in your province. Grade 12s who would like to apply for remarks have until 3 March 2021 to submit their applications, and those results will be released on 26 March,” she said.

Cronje said another option would be to apply for a supplementary exam which could provide a second lease.

“The second option would be to register for supplementary exams and take another opportunity to improve your results. Students are able to write supplementary exams for a maximum of two subjects to meet the pass requirements.”

Cronje said if these two options prove fruitless, they should consider completing their Grade 12 through distance education.

“The 21st century has paved the way for an alternative form of education that is built on the latest technology, and offers a new and innovative option to learners of the digital age. Learners who would therefore like to repeat Grade 12 can do so from the comfort of their own homes, or even while they are working.”
