West Rand District police make 102 arrests during crime operation

Traffic fines to the value of close to R90 000 were issued, 13 dagga plants to the value of R180 000 were confiscated and 102 arrests were made as police continue to stamp their authority on the District.

Police in the West Rand District painted Krugersdorp and Muldersdrift blue during another Okae Molao operation.

Sergeant Mulalo Ndou, spokesperson for the West Rand District police said these operations which were held on Thursday, 18 February, were concentrated on crime-infested areas to make “an immense impact on the crime”.

People were also arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen goods.

They conducted roadblocks, stops-and-searches, compliance inspections of second-hand goods dealers and shops, as well as compliance checks in terms of the Disaster Management Act Regulations. Gauteng and Mogale City Traffic Departments, Department of Community Safety and Correctional Services were also involved in the operation.

The operation focused on hijackings, house and business robberies, burglaries, theft of motor vehicles, rape, and gender-based violence.”

Ndou said they arrested 102 people for various crimes. Among them were five for murder; one for armed robbery; three for common robbery; 13 for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm; six for common assault and domestic violence; three for housebreaking and theft; one for theft; two for possession of suspected stolen property; two for possession of drugs; five for malicious damage to property; two for reckless and negligent driving; one for use of motor vehicle without the owner’s consent; two for rape; four for pointing of firearm; one for contempt of court; one for possession of a dangerous weapon; one for obstruction of justice; one for illicit cigarettes; and two for illegal mining.

“Other crimes such as dealing in dagga, contravention of Disaster Management Act Regulations, dealing in liquor without a licence and undocumented foreign nationals were also policed.”

He added that the teams issued 93 traffic fines to the value of R89 800 as well as two J534s to the value of R3 500. Reportedly, 31 690ml of liquor, 13 dagga plants to the value of R180 000, and a white Corsa bakkie with a fake registration number were confiscated.

Ndou said the District Police Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana had thanked all the law-enforcement agencies for their efforts and dedication by preventing and combating anything that may threaten the safety and security of any communities.

Kekana said the police as the state will continue to stamp their authority to ensure that law and order is maintained within the community and that the West Rand District is safe.
