Police urge residents to be vigilant as town faces more hijacking, house robberies

Randfontein Police warn that hijackings as well as business and house robberies are more prevalent. They also issued safety tips.

Residents of Randfontein have been urged to be more vigilant at their homes, businesses and inside their vehicles.

According to Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, hijackings are more prevalent in and around Finsbury and Mohlakeng, as well as on Main Reef Road, the R559 and the N14. House and business robberies are worrisome in and around the Randfontein CBD, Homelake, Mohlakeng and Toekomsrus.

Here are some handy tips to ensure your safety:

• Keep a distance from other vehicles while driving so that you can have control in case of an emergency
• Stay off your phone and check for suspicious people moving around, especially while you wait at a traffic light and stop sign
• Keep your motor vehicle’s doors locked
• Trust your instincts
• Be observant
• Carefully observe the physical characteristics of hijackers and the vehicles they use to commit crime
• Use routes that most other motorists use
• Don’t stop when someone is flashing their lights at you; drive to the nearest police station
• Do not stop in secluded areas
• Lock your home’s doors and close the windows
• If you hear any noise outside your house at night, do not go outside, contact your police station and ask for assistance
• If you have an alarm at home always activate it

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, Randfontein Police station commander is urging the community to please work with the police and come forward with any information that could assist them.
