Child drowns in flooded shack

Six-year-old boy in Mohlakeng drowned after a shack was flooded with water from a burst pipe.

A six-year-old boy drowned in Mohlakeng when a shack was flooded with water from a burst pipe on Monday, 1 February.

According to Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson, the tragic incident happened on Joshua Nkoma Street when a child was trapped inside one of the flooded shacks.

One of the tenants screamed for the father of the child to go check on his son. Unfortunately, when he arrived, he found the boy lying in the water,” Hendricks said.

Hendricks added the child was declared dead at the Mohlakeng Clinic after he was rushed there.

“Police were informed that tenants were inside the yard when a mass of water streamed into the yard and flooded their shacks,” Hendricks said.

She said police are investigating the matter. Hendricks urged community members to come forward with any information regarding the incident.
