Attempted rape: Man caught with pants down, tries to bribe cops

A man allegedly attempted to rape a woman and later tried to bribe police officers in Rietvallei in December.

A Rietvallei youngster was arrested after attempting to rape a woman and bribe cops near Bongweni not far from Randfontein one Wednesday in December last year.

“The victim alleged that after visiting a friend in Rietvallei she was walking alone in an open space towards Bongweni near Randfontein. The assailant, an 18-year-old suddenly appeared from behind and pushed her to the ground,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, the Kagiso Police spokesperson.

He undressed the victim but a struggle ensued. Then the victim’s boyfriend appeared and came to her rescue. The already half-naked man tried to flee, but some passers-by noticed the incident and also gave chase. Whilst chasing the suspect they spotted a police vehicle and stopped it to alert the police.”

Police reportedly pursued and apprehended the suspect. The man allegedly offered to pay the officers R10 000 to let him go.

“For someone to commit such a heinous crime and think that money can be an answer is a shame. I want to thank residents for respecting the law and not taking it into their own hands,” Brigadier Themba Maduna, Kagiso Police station commander said.
