President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially declared the West Rand District a Covid-19 hot spot area.
The announcement was made on Monday night, 28 December when the president addressed the nation on developments in South Africa’s risk-adjusted response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
We are at an extremely dangerous point in our fight against the pandemic and therefor Cabinet has decided to put the country on an adjusted Level 3 from Level 1 with immediate effect,” the president said.

As at 27 December 2020, the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Rand West City stood at 4 721 with 106 deaths, according to Gauteng Provincial Government’s latest breakdown. A total of 4 076 people have recovered so far.
Mogale City and Merafong City, which are also part of the West Rand District, have had 9 076 and 3 351 cases respectively. Mogale City and Merafong City have seen 8 068 and 3 113 recoveries respectively. A total of 189 people have tragically lost their lives in Mogale City and another 79 people in Merafong City.
The total number of Covid-19 cases reported in the West Rand District as at 27 December is 17 154, with 367 deaths and 15 263 recoveries.
In the neighbouring City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality Region C, which comprises Roodepoort, the number of confirmed cases to date stands at 14 286 with 241 deaths and 12 797 recoveries.
The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Gauteng was standing at 274 272 with 245 919 recoveries and 5 317 deaths.
