AfriForum’s Randfontein branch safeguards more manholes

'We are pleased that there have been no obstructions in the system since June.'

Since launching a project on 16 June 2020 to make manholes in the town safer, the AfriForum branch in Randfontein has equipped a further nine manholes with new covers.

According to Matiam van Vuuren, chairperson of AfriForum’s Randfontein branch, the manhole covers had been stolen and the open holes not only presented a safety risk, but also caused quite a lot of problems.

He said all kinds of rubbish are being dumped into the open holes, which used to block the town’s sewerage system.

Since June the branch has arranged for more covers to be manufactured to safeguard the manholes. We are pleased that there have been no obstructions in the system since,” he said.

Van Vuuren added the open holes are also a huge risk for community members walking past them daily, and for children playing near the holes.

The heavy concrete blocks were placed on the manholes in Railway, Du Toit and Tier Streets, as well as on the corner of Greenhills Avenue and Lark Street.

“AfriForum is encouraging the community to become involved to create a safe future for all of us. Projects such as these are the building blocks of self-management and a sustainable future,” said Dewet Ungerer, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the West Rand.
