From stinking, overflowing sewage to dangerous open manholes.

Residents in Homelake are unhappy about the roads and bad conditions they have been subjected to on Jacaranda Street and Kremetart Avenue for months.

Engela Pretorius, one of the concerned residents said if it’s not the sewage spilling everywhere, which is a source of the terrible stench, they are worried about storm water drains left exposed after their lids were stolen, making then unsafe for pedestrians, especially small children.

“Living in this neighbourhood is not pleasant at all; it’s horrible, we cannot live like this,” Pretorius protested, adding that although the matter has been reported several times, nothing has been done to stop the overflowing sewage permanently.

“Although they did come out to ‘fix’ the problem, it only lasted a few day before it was as bad as ever,” Pretorius said.

Ward councillor Craig Harrison who acknowledged the issues said he has been reporting the matter to the municipality since Wednesday 18 November.

Homelake is one of the oldest suburbs in Randfontein, and with all the student housing and developments the sewerage network needs to be upgraded. This has been raised in our council meetings. If we allow development, we need to ensure the infrastructure is upgraded as well,” Harrison said.
