Another CIT heist this time W’aria: Bullets fly, cash stolen

Several robbers managed to escape with an undisclosed amount of money during yet another CIT heist in the West Rand District, this time on Edward Street in the Westonaria CBD on Monday, 23 November.

According to Brenda Muridili, National Police spokesperson, at about 11am, robbers shot in the direction of a security officer from an unmarked cash van who had just collected cash from a nearby shop. No injuries were sustained.

Muridili said one person, who owns a property where a suspected getaway car was found, was arrested.

“The Nissan NP300 was found with a rifle inside. It was discovered that it had been stolen in Rustenburg in June 2019. Another pistol with ammunition was also found in a different location from the scene,” Muridili said.

She went on to say CIT robberies are a priority to the police, and the management is currently aligning plans to curb this crime to the Safer Festive Season Operations that are being conducted nationally.

“These operations focus on high visibility of members at crime hot spot areas,” Muridili said.
