A resident of Percheron Street in Greenhills is concerned about the poor quality of the work done on the road outside his property.
Vukile Phayaphanya said he has been dodging potholes and trenches that have riddled the street since 2014.
This does not only pose a great danger when driving, but it could damage the rims and tyres of his car, which cost a lot to replace, and it could also bring down the value of his property.
Even when you call the municipality, they’d say they’ll send workers out. The problem is they don’t do a proper job. Sometimes they don’t even complete the job; they’ll be gone just like that,” Phayaphanya complained.
He said in six years, workers were sent to repair the road only twice after they had complained about the conditions on Percheron Street and Koedoe Road, but a few months after they had patched a street, it became eroded again.
“The rain season has started, and I’m always worried that I might drive into these potholes because they are filled with water. Over time, you’ll see your tyres wearing or bubbles forming on them as a result of these conditions,” he said.
Ellik de Lange, a councillor for the Greenhills area has attributed the problems to the municipality’s lack of funds.
There is no money to do things properly. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: Greenhills is one of the most dangerous wards to live and drive in.
“We have on record many other issues that have also been brought to the attention of the Executive Mayor; these are issues that make many people unhappy,” De Lange said.
