An ex-offender on the right path

I just couldn't sit around anymore and think of my past because that makes it easy for you to fall into a trap, maybe even mix with the wrong people again.

Danny David said it takes a man to admit he was wrong but an even better one to try to make things right.

The 38-year-old was released on parole in 2005 for crimes he now lives to regret. He did community work by washing cars at the Bekkersdal Police Station.

“In 2012 I finished my sentence. I just couldn’t sit around anymore and think of my past because that makes it easy for you to fall into a trap, maybe even mix with the wrong people again. “I then decided to earn a living by becoming a permanent car washer at the Bekkersdal Police Station,” David said.

David, who is proud of being a born-again Christian said he thanked God for giving him another shot at life.

Not only to prove that one can turn away from a dark past but as a symbol of hope to many who have lost their way. I said to myself, if I can do so many hours washing cars, I can easily earn a living and put food on the table for my loved ones,” the father of three said.

He added that he is grateful that he can integrate with his community in peace without being judged.

David added although he regrets his past, he has accepted who he is, but said people learn from their mistakes. He added that he wanted to be a good father figure to his children. He said depending on the day, he can wash up to 10 cars.

“You have to get back on your feet and do something with your life. You can’t sit and hope that fortune will drop into your lap. It is really just a matter of time before an opportunity comes knocking at your door. Until then, get busy and do something,” David said.
