Westonaria store shootout ends with robber dead, bystander wounded, two arrests

'A female bystander was taken to hospital in a serious condition after being shot in the abdomen during the shootout' – Westonaria Police.

Westonaria Police confirmed a suspect was fatally shot and another two suspects were arrested during an armed robbery and shootout with security at a retail store on Edwards Avenue in the Westonaria CBD on Wednesday morning, 14 October.

Two unlicensed firearms were recovered, and a female bystander was also seriously injured during the shootout.

According to Sergeant Audrey Sefara, Westonaria Police spokesperson, approximately eight robbers entered the store at about 10.40am and held the employees and customers at gunpoint before taking cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash.

As the suspects were getting out of the store they were confronted by security who responded to the robbery. The suspects started to shoot at the security officer and a shootout ensued, which resulted in the death of one suspect. Others fled on foot and in getaway vehicles,” said Sefara.

Sergeant Sefara added that community members and employees of the store pointed out one of the suspects who had run into a nearby shop, and this resulted in his arrest.

“Police arrested a second suspect who was found with an unlicensed firearm close to the crime scene.”

She added that a female bystander was taken to hospital in a serious condition after being shot in the abdomen during the shootout.

Police have launched a manhunt for the remaining suspects who are still at large.

The suspects are said to be driving a white Nissan Almera, a grey Hyundai Accent and a grey Toyota Quest.

The arrested suspects will be charged with business robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
