Homelake clean-up campaign launched: ‘More to come’ – councillor

Councillor said the clean-up will be done at least once every month.

Residents embarked on a clean-up mission in parts of Homelake on Saturday, 3 October.

According to Craig Harrison, ward councillor in the area and the coordinator of the initiative, many sacrificed their time to rid the area of grime. He added this was an initiative started by Wimpie Kritzinger, a resident who was fed up with the state of the neighbourhood.

“I agreed to the idea, and brought members of my committee and even my own family along. I said I would get the public involved,” Craig said.

On the day of the clean-up, at least 20 residents came out to give a helping hand.

We also wanted to get our water as clean as possible – you can see how dirty it is. This is one area we are focusing on at the moment, but we want to keep going with this project and eventually move to other parts,” Harrison said.

He said they aim to embark on the project on a monthly basis.

Although similar projects fizzled out, he and other members of the DA committee are committed to seeing the project through.

“Unfortunately, people lost interest because there is so much dumping going on in town. It is just too much,” Harrison said.

He went on to thank the Rand West City Local Municipality’s Waste Department for supporting the project by supplying them with garbage bags, masks and cloves.

Wimpie added that the untidiness also give criminals an opportunity to thrive – something that has disturbed peace in the community.

We as a community could not sit and complain. We need to do something about the problem that affects all,” he added.
