Education in SA – more needs to be done

Barachel Christian Academy principal on how to shape young minds into leaders of tomorrow.

Shaneen Mettam, principal of Barachel Christian Academy, said something has to be done about the current education system – or the nation is doomed.

The 63-year-old who co-founded the school in 1994 said she has been privileged to have changed the lives of children during her tenure as teacher, but is adamant that more still needs to be done.

Shaneen, who grew up in Edenvale, said it was during an internship programme that she realised the power of giving learners a new lease on life.

The difference I could make was spiritual, and helping learners to believe in themselves,” Shaneen said.

She said education is important as it gives people the platform to become something in life.

She also said better values have to be instilled in children, and people need to stop obsessing about material things like who drives what car and who will be become the next celebrity – these things have no value to a child’s academic progress. She added children should also be taught how to be responsible citizens.

Shaneen went on to say parents have a role to play in their children’s lives.

There are small things that one can do with their children in their homes that may help stimulate a child’s mind. For example, when they get home, talk to them and ask how their day was. When they speak and use incorrect grammar, correct it immediately,” Shaneen said.

She added that things such as scissors, puzzles and even Lego or cheap building blocks can help a child distinguish between shapes and colours.

“Even if you let your child cut something simple like an apple into two halves or four quarters, they will be learning basic mathematics skills as well without realising it. This is how we can help shape young minds into leaders of tomorrow,” Shaneen added.
